There is an unpredictable beauty to a Michigan autumn. By the time November rolls around, the vibrant fall colors have usually faded, leaving behind a quiet, muted landscape. As a wedding photographer, shooting outdoors during this transitional time of year can always be a bit of a wild card. But for Sarah and Liam’s wedding at Bay Pointe Woods in Shelbyville, Michigan, nature decided to gift us something entirely unexpected: the very first snowfall of the year.

It was early for snow, even by Michigan standards, but it couldn’t have been more perfect. Ironically, Sarah absolutely adores the snow. What could have been a weather hurdle turned into a real-life fairytale, dusting the late-fall foliage in a blanket of bright, whimsical white. It set the most magical tone for a day that was already overflowing with warmth, history, and deep-rooted love.

This wedding held a deeply special place in my heart. About a decade ago, I had the privilege of photographing Sarah for her high school senior portraits. Later on, I photographed her sister’s senior photos, too. To be invited back into a family’s life for a milestone this massive is the ultimate honor. Sarah told me she had always envisioned me as her wedding photographer, and watching her step into her wedding dress all these years later was an incredibly moving, full-circle moment.

Reconnecting with her family and seeing how much life has beautifully unfolded since those senior portrait sessions reminded me exactly why I fell in love with wedding photography in the first place.

Sarah and Liam are high school sweethearts, which means their lives have been beautifully intertwined for years. That history was incredibly evident the moment you walked into Bay Pointe Woods. Their friend group was massive, energetic, and fiercely loyal. Guests traveled from near and far, and the entire day felt less like a formal event and more like a massive, joyful reunion centered around two people everyone genuinely adores.

The aesthetic of the day didn’t rely on a strict color palette or rigid themes—it was centered entirely around family, friendship, and connection.

From a photographer’s perspective, that surprise November snow was an absolute dream. While November can sometimes look a bit bare outside, the fresh snow acted as a giant, natural reflector, bouncing the softest, most beautiful light onto Sarah and Liam. The contrast of the crisp white snow against the modern, wooded architecture of Bay Pointe Woods gave their couple’s portraits a cozy, romantic vibe that you just can’t replicate.
